The Mission

So, what's 'Warlords of Retrosia' all about?

To make it simple: It's my new and old way to approach the complex of fantasy gaming to get my mojo back. And this is how I am going to achive it:

No existing world - create a new one

First of all I decided NOT use any existing fantasyworld, story, book or movie. I don't want to live up someone elses fantasy, I want to create and play my own. Beeing creative is part of the fun. I am not modelling miniatures, but I can create lands, kingdoms, castles, dungeons, stories, rules and so on.

Bring the fun back

Fantasy gaming should be fun. It should not bee too serious, dark, aggressive, bloody, loud and should definitely not be about mind games, social justice, political, racial oder other real world issues. The good, the bad, the ugly. And all painted very colorful. Nothing more.

All miniatures big and small

I use the miniatures I like. RETROsia doesn't mean that it's only about old miniatures. This is not to become a collectors corner. But of course I will use old school miniatures. Because I have a lot of them and because I like them. And I have to admit that I don't like the over-pimped style of modern minis. Not my taste, but I urge you to use what you have and what YOU like. I go with old tin, old lead and sometimes old plastics. In my understanding a fantasy creature does not become more 'fantastic' because it is bigger and carrys a lot of stuff around. And a creature that is two or three times bigger than a full-grown human IS a giant, believe me.

No Nonsense Rules

Most wargaming and roleplaying rulebooks are way too complicated, inflated uselessly to justify a high (or for the publisher at least sensible) sales price and often poorly written. I came across a lot of them and I hated most of them. Period.

And it gets worst when you see that a lot of rulesets are not working correctly and are constantly fixed from edition to edition. That is ridiculous. If you have to roll the dice 3 times and the opponent rolls against it 2 times you still have to look up in a table what has happened then you are in trouble. They are wasting your time by pretending to support you with a mechanism to 'simulate the reality'. A task that is nearly impossible and of no use for games that should be played fast and funny.

My plan is : Adapt and modify a very old fantasy ruleset (surprise, surprice, I found the oldest one and it's not D&D) to make wargaming and adventure gaming in Retrosia (or YOUR version of it) very straigthforward and easy.

Money or my Life?

You can sink a fortune in miniatures. This is the truth and most wargamers know it. I paid a lot for miniatures and everything around it and often the outcome was not worth it.

I take the cheap route from now on: use what I have, what I like, what I can get cheap, including medieval or ancient miniatures or whatever seems to fit. And do some home-casting. I will build terrain, dungeons and buildings and I hope I can show ways to make that cheap and easy.

Getting things done

The risk of never completing a 'project' or at least reaching a point where one is happy with the results increases if you set the bar too high. Any progress can be hindered by quality standards that make completition a hard task. This can lead to the moment where all development halts. Wargamers face this problem very often. I have seen people giving up painting miniatures because they had not the time to do it in the quality they prefered. But they kept on hoarding new miniatures...

I choose the 'good and done' results over the 'excellent but only in my dreams' solutions. So there will be no painting and modelling 'competition' here. This will not be a 'look how good I paint' showroom.

SOLO-Wargaming

SOLO-Wargaming is a thing for me. After all my experiences with other wargamers who never have time, always find other things more important, never want to play the game, world or peroid you want to play, never get involved in campaigns and only play oneshot skirmish games out of sheer indolence, I see great potential in solo wargaming.

Finally: The Outcome

I am going to create a fantasy world and/or a system where I (and you if you like) can play campaigns, battles and adventures. Especially the campaign part is very important to me because a kind of storyline, may it a series of battles or adventures or a mix of both, brings more motivation than anything else and keeps things up and running.

I have some ideas to make the 'tools' for that. Some in a written form and maybe a little bit in software.
